Vertigo Care in Cambridge

Rolling over in bed, looking up at a shelf, or bending to tie your shoes may feel unsettling when it brings on a spinning sensation. If dizziness is changing what you do each day, an assessment can help determine which next steps to consider.
Helios Physiotherapy and Rehab offers vestibular physiotherapy assessments for people experiencing vertigo, dizziness, and balance concerns. We’ll listen to what you’re noticing, assess relevant movements, and explain whether physiotherapy or further medical evaluation is recommended.
Vertigo and Dizziness Can Have Different Causes
Vertigo is the sensation that you or your surroundings are moving or spinning. It is a symptom rather than a diagnosis.
One common cause is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, or BPPV. This occurs when tiny crystals become displaced into an inner ear canal involved in balance. Episodes are often triggered by rolling over, looking up, or bending down. The spinning may be brief and can bring on nausea.
Not every dizzy spell is BPPV. Your health history, medications, vision, and other medical conditions may be relevant. Neck discomfort may also need assessment, but it doesn’t establish the cause of dizziness on its own.
Tell Us What Happens During an Episode
Details that seem small can be useful. Does the room spin, or do you feel lightheaded? How long does it last? Does a particular movement bring it on?
We’ll also ask about falls, changes in hearing, headaches, and how symptoms affect your routine. If your work involves prolonged positions, repetitive movements, or vibration, mention that, too.
If symptoms persist after an emergency department visit or another medical assessment, follow the advice you were given and ask about further evaluation.
What a Vestibular Assessment May Include
Your physiotherapist will review your history and screen for signs that require medical attention. Depending on your symptoms, the assessment may include eye movements, balance, walking, neck movement, and positional tests.
Positional testing may help identify BPPV and the canal involved. If findings are unclear or suggest another cause, we’ll explain why further assessment or referral is needed.
Care Options Based on Your Findings
For BPPV, your physiotherapist may recommend a canalith repositioning manoeuvre. Other options may include gaze stabilisation exercises, balance activities, or manual therapy for associated neck concerns.
We’ll explain each recommendation, discuss your goals, and review your response. The number and frequency of appointments depend on your findings and needs.
