Feeling dizzy, unsteady, or like the room is spinning? Youâre not aloneâand help is available.
đ§ What is the vestibular system, and why is it important?
Himja says:
âThe vestibular system lives in the inner ear and works with your eyes, brain, muscles, and joints to help you stay upright, stable, and aware of where your body is in space. When itâs not functioning properly, people often experience dizziness, unsteadiness, or motion sensitivityâeven with simple movements like turning your head or getting out of bed.â
â ď¸ What are some common reasons people experience dizziness or balance issues?
Himja explains:
âThere are several reasonsâsome people develop BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo), where small crystals in the inner ear shift and cause brief episodes of vertigo. Others may have age-related balance decline, especially seniors, or suffer from neck-related dizziness due to arthritis or posture issues.â
She continues, âWe also see dizziness after concussions, car accidents, jaw tension, and even chronic conditions like migraines or vestibular neuritis. Itâs more common than people think.â
đď¸ How are the eyes, ears, and neck all connected when it comes to balance?
Himja says:
âYour brain is constantly gathering information from your eyes, ears, and neck muscles. If one part is offâlike poor neck mobility from whiplash or visual overload from screensâit creates sensory mismatch, which can cause dizziness, blurred vision, or even anxiety in crowded spaces.â
𧪠What is vestibular therapy, and how can it help?
Himja shares:
âVestibular therapy is a gentle, individualized rehab program designed to retrain your brain and body to process movement and sensory information correctly. At Helios, we start with a full assessmentâincluding eye movement screening, balance testing, and positional checksâand then create a customized plan.â
That plan may include:
- Canalith repositioning for BPPV
- Gaze stabilization exercises for visual motion sensitivity
- Balance and gait training
- Neck mobility and proprioception work
- Fall prevention strategies, especially for seniors
đľ Is this therapy safe and effective for older adults?
âAbsolutely,â Himja says confidently.
âIn fact, seniors benefit immensely. As we age, our visual acuity, inner ear function, and muscle strength all naturally decline. This increases the risk of falls and injury. Vestibular therapy helps restore stability, improve reaction time, and build confidence. Iâve had patients in their 70s and 80s tell me they feel like theyâve gotten their independence back.â
đśââď¸ What symptoms should people not ignore?
Himja advises:
âDonât ignore frequent dizziness, trouble walking in the dark, bumping into things, needing walls for support, or feeling overwhelmed in busy stores. These may be signs that your balance system isnât working optimallyâand the earlier we catch it, the faster and more complete your recovery can be.â
đ Any tips for managing dizziness at home?
Himja recommends:
- âMove slowly when getting out of bed or changing positionsâ
- âUse a nightlight and wear proper footwearâ
- âTake breaks from screens and bright lights if they worsen symptomsâ
- âPractice gentle balance exercises in a safe space, like beside a counter or stable chairâ
- âAnd most importantlyâdonât isolate or stop moving out of fear. Safe, guided movement is key.â
đŹ Final Thoughts from Himja
