Auto Accidents in Cambridge

When you’re involved in a car accident, even a “minor” collision can put sudden force through your entire body, sometimes leading to neck and back pain after a car accident. That quick jolt can strain muscles and tendons, irritate joints, stress ligaments, and sometimes contribute to fractures or concussion-like symptoms.

One of the most common accident-related injuries is whiplash, which affects the neck and may also involve nerve irritation, headaches, dizziness, or upper-back tension.

At Helios Physiotherapy and Rehab, we provide supportive, coordinated care after motor vehicle accidents, including physiotherapy, chiropractic, massage therapy, and more—so you can feel more comfortable and confident as you return to daily life.

Motor vehicle injuries can affect more than just the body; symptoms can also impact sleep, energy, mood, and focus, especially in the early stages after an accident.

Customized Care Plans

Your recovery starts with a thorough assessment. We’ll determine what’s going on, identify contributing factors, and create a care plan tailored to your symptoms, function, and goals.

You may be eligible for auto insurance-funded rehabilitation in Ontario, whether or not you have private insurance. Ontario accident benefits follow the Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule (SABS), regulated by the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA). These guidelines help determine what care may be available and whether pre-approval is required.

In many cases, injuries are initially managed under the Minor Injury Guideline (MIG). MIG commonly applies to sprains, strains, whiplash-associated disorders, and contusions, and typically includes up to 12 weeks of rehab funding to a maximum of $2,200.

If your symptoms are more complex (for example, fractures, nerve injuries, ongoing concussion-type symptoms, or significant functional limitations), your claim may fall outside MIG and into a non-catastrophic classification. In Ontario, non-catastrophic injuries may have up to $65,000 available for medical/rehabilitation benefits (including attendant care), and treatment plans often require insurer approval.

For severe, life-altering injuries, a catastrophic designation may apply, which can provide up to $1,000,000 in coverage. Catastrophic status is typically determined through physician documentation.

What to Expect

Your first visit is approximately one hour.

Please bring:

  • Policy number
  • Claim number
  • Accident date
  • Insurance company name

You’ll review what happened with your provider, then we’ll complete a full assessment. Along with your musculoskeletal exam, we’ll screen for red flags that may require additional medical investigation. If you haven’t already, it can be helpful to see a physician or urgent care to rule out serious injury, especially if symptoms are severe or worsening.

If your injuries fall within a pre-approved framework (often used for minor injuries), care may follow structured timeframes. More complex injuries can require longer care timelines and insurer approvals depending on circumstances.

If approvals are needed, we can support the paperwork process that your insurer may request. This can include forms such as OCF-1, OCF-3, OCF-5, OCF-18 (treatment plan), and, in some cases, OCF-19 (catastrophic impairment application completed by a physician).

Other OCF forms may be required depending on your claim (for example, OCF-23 or OCF-24).

In-Home Service Available

If you’re unable to travel to our clinic, we offer in-home services to support your recovery. You’ll receive the same thoughtful care approach, without the added stress of driving or arranging transport.

When to Seek Urgent Medical Care

Seek urgent medical attention if you notice symptoms such as fainting, severe or worsening dizziness, vision loss, new weakness or numbness, trouble walking, major mood or memory changes, or pain that becomes rapidly worse or unmanageable.

FAQs

Do I need a doctor’s referral to start care after a car accident?

Often, no. Many people can begin physiotherapy and related rehab without a referral, depending on insurer requirements and your situation.

Can I get care if I don’t have private extended health benefits?

Yes. In Ontario, accident benefits may provide coverage for rehab depending on your claim and classification.

What is MIG?

MIG stands for the Minor Injury Guideline. It often applies to sprains, strains, whiplash-associated disorders, and contusions. It typically includes up to 12 weeks of rehab funding to a maximum of $2,200, depending on your insurer’s classification and documentation needs.

What if my symptoms feel worse a few days after the accident?

That’s common. Symptoms such as stiffness, headaches, and back pain can accumulate over time. Early assessment can help guide the right plan.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Your policy number, claim number, accident date, and insurer name (plus any relevant reports you already have).

Do you help with insurance forms?

Yes, our team can support the process by supplying information and documentation your insurer may request.
